Definition
Report Text adalah salah satu jenis teks dalam Bahasa Inggris yang bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi secara umum mengenai sesuatu, baik itu hewan, tumbuhan, benda, maupun fenomena alam. Teks ini bersifat faktual, objektif, dan ditulis dalam simple present tense. Report Text berbeda dengan Descriptive Text karena fokusnya bukan pada hal spesifik, tetapi lebih umum. Misalnya, Report Text membahas “cats” secara umum, sementara Descriptive Text membahas “my cat” secara khusus.
Purpose
Tujuan utama dari Report Text adalah untuk:
- Menyampaikan informasi faktual dan ilmiah.
- Mengenalkan sesuatu secara umum, bukan individual.
- Menjelaskan fenomena alam, benda, makhluk hidup, atau teknologi secara objektif.
Characteristics
- Objektif dan faktual (tidak ada opini pribadi).
- Menggunakan Simple Present Tense.
- Memakai istilah umum dan istilah teknis.
- Berfokus pada hal yang bersifat ilmiah.
Generic Structure
- General Classification — pengenalan umum tentang subjek yang dibahas.
- Description — menjelaskan bagian, sifat, kebiasaan, atau fungsi dari subjek tersebut.
Language Features
- Menggunakan general nouns (misalnya: lions, whales, computers).
- Memakai action verbs (misalnya: run, eat, fly).
- Banyak menggunakan timeless present tense.
- Fakta ilmiah atau data sering dimasukkan untuk mendukung informasi.

Report Text vs Descriptive Text
Report Text mendeskripsikan hal-hal secara umum, sedangkan Descriptive Text menjelaskan sesuatu secara spesifik. Contoh Report Text: “Cats are mammals.”. Contoh Descriptive Text: “My cat is black and cute.”. Keduanya biasanya menggunakan Simple Present Tense, tetapi gaya bahasa berbeda: Report Text objektif, sedangkan Descriptive Text lebih personal.
